Cantus Ensemble presents: Stabat Mater

The Cantus Ensemble performs Scarlatti's Stabat Mater and J.S. Bach's Jesu meine Freude, along with motets by MacMillan and Purcell.

Join the Cantus Ensemble for a performance of two powerful works that both explore faith, suffering, and redemption. Bach’s Jesu, meine Freude celebrates the joy and comfort found in Christ, underpinned by some of the composer's most intricate choral writing and textual illustration. By contrast, Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater delves into the sorrow of Mary at the cross, and is a profound reflection of the human experience of grief and hope.

Henry Purcell's increasingly declamatory Hear my prayer, O Lord opens the concert, while selections from James MacMillan's The Strathclyde Motets offer an entirely different musical experience by way of the Scottish composer's idiomatic use of folk-like rhythms and sumptuous harmonies.

The programme:

Henry Purcell Hear my prayer, O Lord

James MacMillan Strathclyde Motets (selections)
