Cantus Ensemble

Join the Cantus Ensemble for an evocative and stirring programme of works for All Souls' Day, with Maurice Duruflé's moving and iconic setting of the Requiem Mass at its heart.

For this first concert of the 2024-25 season, we perform in our home church of St Gabriel's, Pimlico, which offers the perfect acoustic for Poulenc's Litanies à la Vierge Noire, a deeply moving choral work that blends mysticism with intimacy. Composed after a personal tragedy, its haunting harmonies evoke a meditative, reverent atmosphere, like a quiet, soulful plea.

Woven from the ancient roots of Gregorian chant, Duruflé’s Messe Cum Jubilo, scored for male voices and organ, brings a deep, resonant, almost sacred warmth. With flowing melodies and his own harmonic twists, Duruflé creates a serene yet unexpectedly powerful sound.

Continuing with the roots of Gregorian chant and timeless flowing melodies, Duruflé’s Requiem is a soothing, peaceful, and deeply spiritual work. Unlike many requiems that are dramatic or intense, it is calm, comforting, and full of light - inviting a true sense of reflection.

We are joined by internationally-acclaimed organist Roger Sayer, who accompanies the choir throughout on St Gabriel's recently and richly restored instrument
