London City Orchestra
LCO AUTUMN CONCERT
WELCOME MESSAGE
Adrián Varela
A warm welcome to the inaugural concert of the LCO 2024/25 season.
William Shakespeare inspired some phenomenal music which you will hear tonight, from the magical settings of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Henry V’s epic tale of victory, to the extremes of love and violence of Romeo and Juliet - relationships and subjects that remain relevant today.
It is a joy to tackle this music with as friendly, vibrant, and up-for-it outfit as the LCO. Run by an outstanding, exclusively volunteer management committee that continuesto produce stimulating concert seasons year after year, the relationship between the committee, orchestra, and myself has flourished this autumn, building on from my debut with LCOone year ago. I am certainly looking forward to this concert, as to my second with them in April, when we will tackle other great masterpieces in pursuit of excellence and good vibes at St. John’s, Smith Square.
I am grateful to share such great music as this which we have been lucky enough to have been handed down, and there is no place else I’d rather be than here tonight with this ‘band of brothers’ (and sisters!). To borrow from Shakespeare’s Henry V St. Crispin’s Day speech:
‘And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here.’I hope you enjoy tonight’s concert.
